What is ammonia and what is it used for in hair dyes

Ammonia is a substance that is used in hair dyes to open the scales of the hair and radically change its color, helping to penetrate the pigment deeply with immediate effect and permanent results over time.

It is a rather aggressive substance with a pungent smell, which can cause various problems in the case of a very sensitive scalp and deeply damage the hair.

Types of hair dye without ammonia

The colors without ammonia can be of three types:

  • 100% vegetable dyes without ammonia: Henna first of all. They appear as powders to be mixed with hot water and should be kept on for 1 to 3 hours;
  • Semi-permanent dyes without ammonia: the pigments are deposited externally to the hair and are eliminated after 8-10 washes;
  • Permanent dyes without ammonia: they contain a vegetable component and cosmetic pigments that are deposited in the hair.

The differences concern the duration of the results, the intensity of the color and the coverage of gray hair.

Differences between dye with ammonia and dye without ammonia

In the dye with ammonia, the color is fixed by opening the scales of the hair: the coloring particles are deposited inside the shaft and the color is radically changed. After the treatment the scales do not close with obvious damage to the stem: this ruins the hair that appears dull and brittle.

Ammonia-free dyes are more delicate, mainly composed of cosmetic pigments that replace ammonia with valid results across the board. Safer, they color the hair making it healthier and shinier thanks to the important component of vitamins and nourishing and moisturizing oils inside them.

However, it is good not to overdo it: the ideal frequency between one color and another is at least 40 days to allow the hair to regenerate and recover from the treatment.

How to use

The use is simple and intuitive, perfect to be replicated at home in complete safety and without going to the hairdresser.

Here are the steps to follow:

  • Prepare the hair: wash it the day before to make sure the color sets completely. The dirtier the hair, the better the color adheres to it.
  • Prepared: wear protective gloves, a cape or a towel and cover the work surface with absorbent paper. You avoid staining your skin and everything around you (and trust me: it's not easy to remove stains!)
  • Mix the dye and the color developer. In most cases you will find both in the package, alternatively you can buy hydrogen peroxide separately.
  • Divide the hair into four sections and apply the dye starting from the roots. Repeat until the lengths and roots are covered.
  • Maintain the pose: the time varies according to the product and the result to be obtained. It ranges from a minimum of 15 minutes to a maximum of 40 minutes.
  • Rinse: once the required processing time has elapsed, rinse the color with lukewarm water until it is completely clear.
  • Cleanse: then wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner.

Times and methods are indicative and vary from product to product. We advise you to always strictly follow the instructions on the back of the package.

Exposure time

From a minimum of 15 to a maximum of 40 minutes. In the most modern fast-acting colors, the time can be up to 10 minutes.

How long does it last

The duration is that of a classic hair dye with ammonia, from 3 to 8 weeks depending on the type.

The color fades with washes and it is important to treat the hair with highly nourishing masks and oils to maintain vigor and softness.

What it contains

An ammonia-free hair color contains cosmetic pigments (ammonia substitutes) and a mix of oils and vitamins with protective, moisturizing and nourishing action. A few examples? Floral oils and other oils such as jojoba, argan, coconut that help to give the hair vitality and reflections a delicious glossy effect.

Some dyes do not contain parabens and resorcinol, elements considered harmful to the health of the hair.

Does ammonia-free hair dye damage hair?

Being a more delicate formulation, it is less aggressive on the hair. So no, it doesn't ruin them but it keeps them healthy, beautiful, strong and extraordinarily bright.

However, we advise you not to use it excessively and closely: the ideal would be to keep 40 days between one color and another.

Use ammonia-free hair dye during pregnancy

It's possible. The absence of ammonia makes it a recommended hair color during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

It is also recommended for hair color in case of very sensitive skin.

Does it cover white hair?

The ammonia-free dye covers 100% of white hair. The effect is the same as that guaranteed by a common permanent color.

Can dye without ammonia cause allergies?

Yes, like all permanent, semi-permanent and temporary colors. To evaluate skin tolerability, carry out a small test by applying a minimum amount of cream on the skin and check if there are allergies.

Choose the color without ammonia

Choosing the color that best suits our needs requires experience and attention. Surely it is important to start from your hair color and evaluate what we want to achieve: since it is a tone-on-tone color it is not possible to distort the starting color.

The ammonia-free hair dye is fine if you want to lighten or darken your hair by two tones. In all other cases you will have to resort to bleaching or other more aggressive coloring treatments.

How do you choose the color? We explain it to you in the following lines.

Composition

Let's start with the composition. A good ammonia-free hair dye should not contain alkalizing agents (ammonia). Instead, it may contain parabens, perfumes, anti-oxidants and color precursors.

The basic package always contains the coloring cream. In the more complete versions you will also find the color revealing cream (hydrogen peroxide), the post color balm, gloves and cape.

Quality

Always rely on the most important brands. Reading reviews is essential to be on the safe side: don't choose cheap or, even worse, unknown coloring. You risk obtaining questionable results and running for cover with three times the cost.

Duration and color intensity

If you want a more intense color, consider an ammonia-free oil color: the oils contained within it intensify the final color and totally revive the reflections with a superlative glossy effect.

If you want a longer duration of gray hair coverage, rely on dyes that guarantee long-lasting results regardless of the number of washes.

Conclusions

Ammonia-free hair dyes are the best solution to 100% cover gray hair without damaging the hair. Easy and safe to use, they ensure professional results and healthy, shiny and perfectly colored hair.
